On the TV show Amen, Thelma Frye married the Rev. Dr. Ruben Gregory and proudly proclaimed the name Mrs. Thelma Gregory. You see to us it was a declaration that God was a promise keeper and will give us the desires of our heart. To Thelma it was an honor and a privilege to wear the name of the man she loved.
Why is it that in many of today’s marriages the wife would rather spare her identity then assume the one of her spouse? Meaning she would rather keep her name and hyphenated her spouses or in some cases keep the exes and hyphenated the new husbands. The Bible is very specific on the marital role “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”-Genesis 2:24. (Extra emphasis onone flesh.) As a married woman I have taken my husbands last name and as a divorced woman I have returned to the usage of maiden name. I do know when God blesses me to become a Mrs. again that there will be no trace of my ex husband or my single life as that was not God’s design. I would love to hear your feedback on this matter as I especially see a lot of this amongst the Body of Christ.
